Merry Christmas! I wanted to take a minute to say how appreciative I am of everyone that has supported me in my ventures in the art world. Whether we spoke at a show or gallery, you purchased my work, or allowed me to sell work at your gallery, or any of the other interactions in the art world, I truly love this business. This has been my best year yet, and it seems that each experience has opened a door or taught me more about my walk through this life. That being said, I’ve had this feeling for a few months that there are changes coming. My next show is the Nansemond Suffolk Academy Art Show and Sale, January 27 – February 3. The opening reception will be January 27, 10a.m.- 4p.m. This is the only show I applied for for spring 2013. I will continue my freelance work and plan to apply for shows for the latter half of the year. Have a wonderful holiday and prosperous new year~Phantom of the Opera piece by Marcie Evans Art and Foam Creations of Va

It’s the Monday after the Seawall art show in Portsmouth Virginia and although I’ve trudged through some of the paperwork and accounting of the weekend I have yet to finish unpacking the van! This was my first year at Seawall and although the weather was not cooperative (thunder storms saturday morning and Sunday just before closing, tornado warnings and on/off rain) it was a decent weekend. I haven’t done a lot of different shows, but this one will stand out from the crowd because of the wonderful staff that took care of the artists. The general public probably doesn’t think about the logistics of being an artist at one of these shows… being in your booth ALL day, rain or shine, having to get food and then eat it without neglecting customers… not to mention having to visit the restroom! If you have a willing family member or friend then it’s easy to ‘tag-team,’ but often we find ourselves thirsty or hungry (or in need of the loo) and we don’t want to leave for fear of missing a sale or leaving our ’stuff’ unattended. Well, the folks at Seawall have it all covered. Not only did they come around to each artist with coffee and juice each morning, but they came around with coolers of ice cold water several times each day. In the morning someone came around so we could schedule a break- yep- I had a wonderful lady take care of my customers while I ran to get some lunch. AND before the show even started we were all given an orange clothespin with a ribbon on it that we could clip to our tent to alert them that we needed help- what a wonderful idea! As a group these people were efficient and organized and also friendly and glad to be there-in spite of getting soaked in the rain! As I said earlier the weather was the pits and because of that the crowds weren’t what they probably should have been, but I’ll definitely try this one again because the artists were so well taken care of. Thank you to everyone who braved the elements to come to the show and a huge thank you to the staff of the Seawall show!

Biennial 2012, Peninsula Fine Arts Center, Newport News July 21- October 7

Out of the Box, Blue Skies Gallery, Hampton June 27- August 5

Remember all those bottle caps?? If you haven’t been to the Hampton Roads Convention Center be sure to stop in and look! ‘Forest Lager’ is a triptych in shades of gold, orange and red bottle caps, and ‘Trio of Sails (Three Sheets to the Wind)” uses over 6000 bottle caps to create a scene of sailboats on the water. YES I am still collecting caps!

I’m also collecting nails- any kind, any size.

Thanks to everyone who continues to ’support the arts’ with caps and nails

Inspired by an upcoming show at Blue Skies Gallery, I have been playing with a new medium- Encaustics! The show titled ‘Out of the Box’ encourages artists to prepare and exhibit new work in a medium other than what is on display at the gallery. Currently I have nails/ metal work on display and I saw this as an opportunity to try something new to me that I’ve had an interest in for a while. Honestly I have very little knowledge of the process, but this has never stopped me before and so far I have two pieces that I like quite a bit. The nude is my current favorite – I’ve been wanting to explore changing angles and proportions in my figure sculptures- I haven’t been able to push myself as far as I want in altering the curves and positioning, but I’m still working on it. Also, I’m not sure if a local gallery would hang the nude for me- I did a series of nudes last summer and was so excited. I could hardly wait to pack them and get them on display at the next show. I ended up covering ‘certain areas’ with fabric and magnets so that the nudes were covered but the fabric could be removed by the buyer. The director of the show came through and shared that she had panicked when she saw them being unpacked but saw the fabric and thanked me for the discretion While I understand they don’t want pornography I felt what I had was tasteful and was disappointed that nudes weren’t welcome at an art show. …oh well… Anyway, as far as this new medium, I’m sure the ‘real’ encaustic artist would balk at my method, but it’s been tons of fun. For today though I have a gourd order I’m working on and I’d better get back to it!

I forgot that i took a few photos while ‘Starry Night … Last Call’ was in progress.

I’ve been collecting bottle caps for several years with the help of many MANY people who generously offer to save (and sometimes deliver) their caps rather than discard them. It wasn’t until these last projects that I realized I should have been sorting all along and this first photo is the sorting process.

I wanted to start with a piece that I like and would be easily recognizable, and Van Gogh’s Starry Night seemed a perfect fit. I printed a copy of the original painting and to insure accuracy of my interpretation, I gridded the painting into manageable units. I also wanted to divide the work into pieces and decided a triptych would be ideal. Panels were cut and temporarily framed and prepared with a rough outline of the painting. Bottle caps were placed on the panels according to color and since this piece is meant to be viewed from a distance I spent the next week climbing up and down a ladder to make sure lines and colors were working.

When everything seemed in place, the caps were removed one at a time to apply the adhesives… still while climbing up the ladder to make sure everything was in place.

I was expecting to be shaking snow (or cold mud!) off my boots and cranking up the heat in the studio this winter, but I haven’t had to…yet! Freelancing has picked up significantly since December and it seems like my art brain is in constant motion. I’m finding a fascination in small fasteners and seem to be involved in a series of sorts – female torsos, zippers and industrial metals. I’d love to find some antique gears, but for now have been blessed with these really cool toothy wheel things. My next shopping venture will be for more welding wire and maybe the helping hand thing I saw in the Harbor Freight ad. Last week I spent more time adjusting the locking pliers than welding and it took forever to get the pieces lined up the way I wanted them. Back to work now- I have new piece perched on the mantle and hope to finish another by Sunday. Below is a photo of a request from a much loved friend for her brother in law who liked… well that part’s obvious. Acrylic paint on wood plaque

Thank you to everyone who came to AOFTA Wlliamsburg and the Port Warwick Art & Sculpture show in Newport News. In Port Warwick my art neighbor came to my tent to ask me if I “knew everyone.” I told him of course I don’t know EVERYONE- just the NICE ones!

FYI- in spite of the economy I won’t be looking for a ‘real job’ yet- we’ll see how the rest of the year goes.

Working now to get ready for Poq Seafood Festival- a more relaxed show for me since it’s ‘home.’ Back out to the studio!
